The year 1994 was landmark for transplantation activities in India as both brain death and brain stem death legislation and legalisation were passed by the parliament and the first heart transplant surgery was successfully performed. Little has happened in this country since then. This compilation takes us through me and my teams’ experiences during the last five heart transplants we had managed to perform in a tertiary care centre within a government set up in the Eastern part of this country.

No early in-hospital mortality was reported.

Dr. Gautam Sengupta is a cardiothoracic Surgeon and presently, the Secretary of the West Bengal Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons. He was the Professor and the Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at SSKM Hospital, Kolkata, India. Apart from Coronary Artery Bypass, his vast experience involves cases with complex Cardiothoracic and Vascular trauma, tracheal repairs and reconstructions, initiated minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS). He has also initiated a video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) as a sub-unit within his department.
