This book is the first part of a two-volume series on Indian English Writing, fiction in particular. The emphasis is on the changing and developing Indian consciousness in the colonial and post-colonial history of the Indian subcontinent.
The mental journey as reflected in the Indian writing in English, as the native mind struggled to accept, master and express itself in the language of the colonizers. The beginnings were hesitant, then experimental and with a whole-hearted growing confidence. As the generations and history changed, so did this literary journey, reflecting the changing reality. This change is particularly striking between the early decades of the twentieth century and the second half, between the colonial and post-colonial reality.
This volume traces this movement from its inception to the vitality of expression. The complexity of the modern ethos of the Indian experience after 1947 is analysed, as it is expressed in Indian English literature The historical background and the trends of Indian English fiction are discussed with a concentrated view of Anita Desai’s work.
